Satiriko Theatre

The Satiriko Theatre of Cyprus was founded in October 1983 by actor-director Vladimiros Kafkarides, after leaving the State Theatre. His aim was to break new ground, in the area of Independent Theatre, working with the conflux of old and new actors.

After the death of Vladimiros Kafkarides at the age of 52, the then president of the Republic of Cyprus and the Government, granted the Chant-éclair Theatre – through the intermediacy of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation – to be the permanent house of the Satiriko Theatre, accompanied by a state fund. The death of Mr. Kafkarides was the catalyst that brought about the institution of state funding for Independent Theatre in Cyprus.

Today, the Satiriko Theatre employs 10-15 actors, 5 technicians and 4 managerial staff. It operates through 4 stages: the Main Stage, the Second Stage, the Youth Stage and the Puppet Theatre Stage. The comprehensive cycle of its work presents 7-8 productions a year (3 on the Main Stage, 2 on the Second Stage, 1 on the Youth Stage and 1-2 of Puppet Theatre) articulated through 230 performances per annum and attended by 70-80 thousand spectators across the whole of Cyprus. More than 1000 families subscribe to the Satiriko Theatre.

The Satiriko Theatre is responsible for the foundation of the first Cypriot Drama School, in 1992. It is in fact the only Drama School in Cyprus and offers high standards of education for young people aiming to follow a career in acting.

In December 2001 construction begun of the Vladimiros Kafkarides Cultural Centre, on a large piece of government property, granted to the Satiriko Theatre by the Republic of Cyprus for this purpose, together with a fund of 250 thousand CYP. The work was completed in the autumn of 2009. The Cultural Centre houses 2 theatre halls: a large hall able to accommodate 500 spectators, bearing a revolving stage and orchestra, and a smaller one with a capacity of 150 seats. It also houses the Vladimiros Kafkarides Drama School constituted by 6 teaching halls and a library. A theatre museum will be integrated in the future, which will include, among other attractions, a dressing room with the theatrical objects of Vladimiros Kafkarides, an art gallery, a bookshop and a café-restaurant.
