The Cultural Department of the Municipality of Larnaca was established over 20 years ago, aiming to build essential cultural structures for the city and to create much needed cultural spaces such as the Municipal Gallery, the Municipal Theatre and the Pattichion Municipal Amphitheatre.

Its department acts on behalf of the Mayor and the Municipal Council, who are responsible for promoting arts and culture in Larnaca. It also plays a central role in the organization of the town’s cultural life. The Cultural Department stages various events including activities of cultural, artistic, sports, national and religious content. Many of these events take place regularly and seasonally and have become key parts of Larnaca’s cultural landscape, such as, the European Cultural Winter, the Larnaca Festival, the Kataklysmos Festival [commemorating the biblical Flood], the Zenonio Free University of Larnaca and the Fortnight of Amateur Creation.

The Cultural Department of the Municipality of Larnaca is also responsible for managing the town’s theatres and other public cultural spaces, as well as ensuring their availability for interested persons who aim to enrich Larnaca’s culture.
